HM Coastguard is conducting a shoreline search in East Cowes in a bid to locate a metal item suspected of being a piece of World War II ordnance.
Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team are in attendance on the Esplanade at the most northern end, close to the landslip.
It comes after photos were published on social media by a member of the public asking for others’ opinion on their suspicious discovery. At least 1 commenter raised the possibility of it being an anti tank mine.
UPDATE @ 19:25 – HM Coastguard are now standing down from the incident
Explosive Ordnance Disposal experts have determined that the object is not explosive and poses no threat.
The piece of metal has been confirmed as a pressure relief valve and has now been removed from the area.
