UPDATED: A fire has broken out at a popular fish and chip shop in Wootton this evening (Monday).
Several fire appliances from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are in attendance at Terrys Fish and Chip shop on Wootton High Street having been alerted to the incident at around 18:30.
3 appliances from Newport and East Cowes are on scene alongside an Aerial Ladder Platform and the Incident Command Unit.
The front of the chip shop is filled with black smoke, understood to be the result of a chip pan fire in the range – according to a fire service spokesperson.
No persons have been reported and the fire has been contained to the frying area. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are using hose reels Tom extinguish the flames.
The road is currently open in both directions, although there are delays in the area.
UPDATE @ 19:28 – The fire, which has caused significant damage, has now been brought under control.
It has been confirmed that the fire broke out in a display cabinet and spread to the extraction system.
Resources are starting to stand down from the incident, but some crews are expected to stay on scene for a while longer.
The business is expected to be closed for the foreseeable future but the owners say they will endeavour to re-open.
