CEMETERY WALL DESTROYED IN CRASH INVOLVING SUSPECTED DRINK DRIVER

A 33-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving after crashing into a cemetery wall in Cowes overnight, which then led to an altercation with his passenger.  Police were called shortly after 02:20 this morning (Sunday) to reports of a single vehicle collision at the junction of Newport Road and Mill Hill Road. It had been reported that an altercation between the 2 occupants of the car was taking place. Officers arrived on scene to find a vehicle had smashed into the stone wall of Northwood Cemetery – narrowly missing a lamp post and a bollard. A woman in her 40s was soon located with an injury to her head, which required treatment. However, her injury has been assessed as not life changing or life threatening. The driver of the car, a 33-year-old man from Ryde, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving a motor vehicle when alcohol level is above the limit and common assault. He remains in custody at this time.
