UPDATED: Fire crews are this evening (Tuesday) tackling a caravan fire in the back garden of a property in Bembridge.
Appliances from Ryde and Bembridge are damping down the scene having battled against a fire which has destroyed a caravan at a property in Brooke’s Close.
A concerned neighbour dialled 999 shortly after 18:30 after spotting that a caravan parked in the adjoining garden had caught fire. It is understood a bonfire spread to the trailer unit before also quickly spreading to a hedge.
It was initially feared that gas canisters may have been inside the caravan, however those fears were allayed by the owner who also confirmed that there was no one inside.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus have used a main jet and hose reels to extinguish the flames and are now damping down the charred remains and nearby shrubs.
Island residents are being reminded to park sensibly, especially on tight roads, as fire crews were delayed in their arrival on scene as they were unable to pass parked vehicles.
UPDATE @ 20:00 – Fire crews have now fully extinguished the blaze and are returning to station.
