UPDATED: Firefighters are working to extinguish a fire in the grounds of Ventnor’s scout hut this evening (Monday).
One appliance from Ventnor was mobilised to the scene off Trinity Road at around 19:15 after a caravan was reported to be well alight, with black smoke billowing into the air.
Crews are extinguishing the blaze using a hose reel and are also using a thermal imaging camera to check for hotspots, with fire damage caused to a nearby tree and shrubbery.
The scout hut – which has been undamaged in tonight’s incident – last week suffered vandalism, leading to fears that this evening’s fire was started deliberately.
The caravan, which was used by the 3rd Ventnor Scouts as a storage unit, has been completely destroyed.
UPDATE @ 20:50 – The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service have now left the scene having fully extinguished and dampened down the area.
Police are investigating the suspected arson.
UPDATE TUESDAY – 3rd Ventnor Scouts are requiring the assistance of the local community to help continue their service to over 60 children as best they can.
A skip is required to safely remove the fire-damaged material. If you are able to assist, call Julie Quinlan on 01983 401102.
Anyone with information regarding either incident should contact Police on 101. Information can be given anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
