A car has been damaged beyond recognition in a crash on Racecourse this morning (Thursday).
The silver sports car – believed to be a Vauxhall VX220 – has careered off the carriageway between Racecourse Roundabout and the start of Fairlee Rd – on a straight stretch of road.
Island Echo understands the driver was returning from work in East Cowes shortly before 06:30 when the rear wheel drive vehicle suddenly spun out in wet conditions, resulting in the car going backwards into a hedge on the opposite side of the road.
Thankfully, the driver has escaped injury and has been able to walk away from the crash unaided.
Recovery of the 2-seater – a fairly rare car with only 400 currently on the road – has been arranged, which could lead to travel disruption later on this morning.
No other vehicles have been involved.
Police have been alerted to the crash but have not yet attended the scene.

Torque steer? ♂️
Not on a rear wheel drive car. Oversteer, due to too much throttle, or to put it another way, driving like a di**head.
My thoughts straight away. Some who’s obviously heard the tern but has no idea what it means.
Torque steer is for front wheel drive cars. Old day MINIS were good at that. For RWD cars the correct phrase is ‘Drifting’- fovourite past time of Jap cars LOL I can’t quite tell what car it is but it looks like a ‘super car’ if those rear vents are anything to go by…
These crashes don’t just happen ‘randomly’ ‘all of sudden’ without reason.. Stop driving like idiots and these things will hardly ever happen.. Luckily in this case overconfident selfish speeding driving as we see all the time didn’t cost any other driver….
Why don’t you think more about what could of happened instead of just assuming it was someone speeding. It could have been a tyre blow out, diesel on the road, an animal running out, mechanical issue or many other reason. I’m not saying the driver wasn’t at fault but until you know the facts maybe keep an open mind.
50mph stretch of road, could have had a blowout. Please think before you make assumptions!!
Vtec kicked in yo
Another hedge jumping out in front incident, or spilt coffee, or itchy right foot, or the road did a wiggle, or?
Coming from work? A nightshift perhaps? If so and tired they should take it steady. Thankfully no-one was injured.
Too much car and not enough driver…
The driver said the car “suddenly spun out in wet conditions”! Nothing to do with a blowout, the only cause here was obviously the nut behind the wheel!
Vauxhall VX220??
an elise in drag. hairdressers car?
Accurate
399 on the road 1 off the road
If you hit those massive potholes in the road at speed in a sporty car with very little suspension, then this is bound to happen.
Even if you had a blow out it would not have caused that type of crash if you had been driving sensibly in the wet conditions. Typical isle of wight driving
Why is it when there is a crash most people say it’s due to speed until you know all the facts how can you say what happened unless your in the vehicle stop making assumptions
Why don’t these crash victims post dashcam proof of their immaculate driving then?
Or the obviously perfect drivers who co. Mrnt on here post theirs? Show everybody how it’s done?!
Give me £150 for a Nextbase and we have a deal
Honestly, we must be more aware of these dangerous vehicles that suddenly “spin out” like that and go careering around as they please. Shock, horror.
Trading Standards should issue a warning…….
When will these drivers realise drive on the hard black stuff NOT on the soft green stuff!
Have these drivers even read the high way code.
Near the race course, maybe that’s more suitable jumping the fences by car not horse lol!
Obviously the driver is not an Island Echo reader or he would have known that trendy accidenteers (new word, just invented it, accept it) flip their testosterone wagons onto their rooves. Apparently this model of car is fairly rare, even rarer now me thinks.
Its not that bad…it will polish out
Tooooooo fast
399 left now.
Well, there’s not 400 on the road anymore, only 399. Such a shame NOT!
Speeding?
Just give the driver a dustpan and brush and make him clear up the mess.
The driver didn’t do anything wrong just didn’t see that jumping hedge
400-1 =399
If it really did what the driver said then the other 399 need to be taken off the road.
