The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service have already tackled 3 separate fires in the open this morning (Wednesday).
An appliance from Ryde was mobilised to St Michael’s Road in St Helens at around 09:45 when a hedge was reported to be alight. The single crew worked to extinguish the fire and left the scene by 10:20.
1 appliance from Newport is currently in attendance off Noke Common where a smouldering campfire in the fields has been extinguished with buckets of water.
Meanwhile, on the other side of Newport, another appliance is in attendance at a fire in a field at Blackwater. A single pump and crew are on scene near to Stone Farm, but a water carrier from Ventnor is also heading towards the scene.
It was reported to Island Echo that smoke was billowing across the main Blackwater Road at 09:55.
If you see a fire in the countryside, contact the fire service immediately on 999. Do not attempt to tackle fires that cannot be put out with a bucket of water.
Remember, do not discard cigarettes or other smoking materials in the countryside. It is also important to clear away bottles, glasses and any broken glass to avoid them magnifying the sun and starting a fire.
Always take extra care if using a barbecue and only light fires or BBQs in designated areas. Never leave a campfire or BBQ unattended and extinguish them properly after you have finished using them.
