Bomb disposal experts were called to an address in Rookley yesterday (Thursday) after a homeowner dug up a hand grenade in their front garden.
Police were alerted to the explosive find at an address on Bunkers Lane and attended the scene to make the area safe.
Photos of the object were sent over to the Royal Navy’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team in Portsmouth, who confirmed that the find appeared to be the real deal.
The garden remained cordoned off until Bomb Disposal could attend to safely remove the grenade.
Island Echo is told that the homeowner was digging in his front garden when he came across the explosive.
Anyone who finds a piece of suspected ordnance should call 999 and ask for the Police.
Most fortunate it wasn’t dug up with the King Edwards. Peeling or Mashing could have bent the knife or implement rather badly.
Hope a metal detector is used to look for others in the area.
