Floating Bridge staff will wear body cameras in an attempt to deter members of the public from abusing them.
Staff on the troubled Cowes to East Cowes crossing will join other council officers, including the civil enforcement team, in wearing the form of CCTV.
A council spokesperson said it was felt that “owing to the standard of behaviour of some members of the public, it might deter them from verbal abuse and act as a reminder to treat our staff with respect.”
Staff currently work on the Floating Bridge 6, which has a chequered service history, being pulled out of service.
The vessel also has late night trips, finishing just after midnight, for those travelling between towns after a night out.
The cameras are units already owned by the council’s commercial services department and no specific amount of money was required to provide them for the Floating Bridge team.
No date has yet been set for the roll out of the cameras to the staff.

that’s halar.more money wasted
any why you think people are p d off at the staff huh! aint rocket science
anyway wont get much footage as the money pit never runs
Provide a reliable service.
These cameras will spend more time on charge then being used on the stupid bridge thing
i would have thought that the body cameras would be worn to collect evidence of the bridge actually in operation, as it is rarer than a solar eclipse.
wow should get some great close up video footage of them fixing it. Mind you they would only need a still camera as it never moves very often.
That’s disgusting behaviour, its not the crew’s fault, they didn’t build that useless lump of metal, put the one’s that did on it and let the public have a go at them.
Do what the pubs do – maintain a list of banned people and refuse to carry them.
They can travel down to Newport and back up the other side of the Medina to complete their journey.
Like those who aren’t banned, but have to go via Newport anyway because it’s never running.
It’s not the fault of the staff. They only work there. Come on. Don’t blame the workers. Blame the ones responsible. Behind the scenes they are.
Will that capture the staff laughing when cars ground getting on and off?
Do the crew get paid when Floaty is out of service?
And where might one apply to join?
Seriously you cannot blame the staff that work on this piece of art …..
It is nothing to do with them they are just trying to do a job .
I actually feel they take all the flak for the idiot’s that have spent so much of tax payers money …. theirs included !
So please don’t criticise them or be rude to them it really isn’t their fault….
Look back to those Council members who agreed to this piece of C — ……..
Are they really necessary the heap doesn’t run enough to justify the cost.
More or our money waisted yet again.
As they say ‘ sticks & stones ‘ you know the rest.
If punch ups that’s a different matter!
