Police and HM Coastguard rushed to Shanklin earlier this evening (Friday) to reports of a body floating in the sea – but all wasn’t quite as it seemed.
Emergency services were mobilised to Hope Road Car Park on the Esplanade at just before 17:50 when members of the public reported seeing an object floating in the sea, which they believed to be a body, in the fading light.
Multiple Police units responded at speed, with Coastguard Rescue Teams from Bembridge and Ventnor also tasked alongside Sandown & Shanklin Independent Lifeboat.
However, upon closer inspection by the lifeboat, it became clear that the ‘body’ was in fact a piece of wood.
The incident was brought to a quick conclusion.

A decent pair of Binoculars might be a good idea. Lol
What a waste of time and money for a piece of Wood
Who carries around a pair of binoculars u NPC
Yes i always take a pair of binoculars with me every time I go for a walk. If i ever see a body floating Ill be sure to waste time going home to get a pair first before contacting the emergency services, because if on the off chance it is a person I’m sure they wont mind waiting and will totally understand why I went home first
More Numpty Caulkheads who dont know what a piece of wood likes.
Shame
But we know where to find some.
Between your ears
With Brains, something Caulkheads lack.
Must be the Sea Air.
Lol
Probably a old fart causing trouble again
Probably a floating Turd from all the sewage being dumped in the Sea
Its called good intentions and far from a waste of time
Waste off time and money when they could have been better off with getting rid off old farts
It’s called a waste of resources and a waste of money
If it makes you feel better you can call it good intentions
I know what I call it.
I thought the only dead wood we have over here was Jordan and Seeley.
Burp burp burp pardon
What a plank who called this..how much did that cost..
Maybe it was the Floating Bridge they saw!
Oh of course not it doesn’t float.
The same busy body type who report every rusty lump of iron on the shore ‘imagining’ they have saved a child from being blown apart from some soon to start ticking war time relic
Some love the feel good factor. Likely not enough praise as a child.
I saw a dead sailor in the sea off Shanklin…
