Firefighters from numerous Island stations are battling a field fire in the South Wight this lunchtime (Thursday).
Island Echo understands that pumping appliances from Newport and Ventnor are on scene off Blackgang Road having first been called at around 12:00.
It is thought that a fire has broken out in some overgrown and unused land between Blackgang Chine and what used to be the Merlins Indian Tandoori Restaurant.
Heavy winds in the area are forcing smoke across the road, whilst firefighters attempting to tackle the fire are fighting their way through thick vegetation to reach the source of the blaze.
The incident remains ongoing.
UPDATE @ 13:05 – With access continuing to prove difficult water is currently being extracted from a hydrant within Blackgang Chine.
UPDATE @ 15:00 – Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service have confirmed that the source of the fire was an out of control bonfire.
Crews extinguished the blaze with 2 main jets before handing the incident back to site staff.
A controlled burn will prevent the occurrence of a far worse fire later.
How it that possible..must of been deliberate..
