A bird watcher risked their life – and sparked an emergency call out for Coastguards – when they climbed the wrong side of the safety fence at the top of the cliff at Culver Down this morning (Saturday).
It was shortly before midday that volunteers at Bembridge’s National Coastwatch Institution lookout sighted an individual climbing over the safety fence and walking along the cliff top at Culver Down.
HM Coastguard was alerted to the situation, with Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team and Bembridge RNLI paged to respond to the East Wight beauty spot.
It was feared that an individual was in a vulnerable state.
However, the first Coastguard Rescue Officers on scene were able to quickly establish that no harm was intended… the individual sighted on the cliff top was simply bird watching.
The twitcher had climbed over the fence in order to get a better vantage point, it is claimed.
Strong words of advice were given in respect of the dangers of cliff edges and unstable ground.
The incident was stood down before Bembridge RNLI could launch its inshore lifeboat.
If you or someone else is in difficulty on the coast or at sea, or if you spot what you think may be unexploded ordnance, then dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Further safety information can be found at https://coastguardsafety.campaign.gov.uk/.
