It was a thing of beauty and shrouded in mystery when it first appeared on the beach at Compton, but the now dismantled and damaged monolith has appeared on eBay looking worse for wear.
The monolith made international headlines on Sunday after Island Echo first reported about the 10ft reflective object.
Just days later it was revealed the manmade structure had been constructed by local man Tom Dunford after he had seen similar structures elsewhere in the world.
After being defaced and damaged, the monolith was hauled up to Hanover Car Park for disposal earlier today (Friday). But now it has appeared on the popular auction website eBay – and bidding for the ‘authentic, real deal’ starts at just 99p.
The seller has explained how he was passing Compton when he spotted the ‘as seen on TV’ item being placed in the back of a National Trust vehicle. A donation was made to the Trust to buy the monolith and the seller left with the mirrored panels in hand.
Sadly, the monolith is in a very sorry state with cracks and chips to the glass and the timber plinth that the item sat on is missing, but could easily be rebuilt.
You can view the item for yourself at https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/133603946872?. Buyers are warned that it is for collection only.

It was aloens from planet B&Q
It was aliens from planet B&Q.
And proceeds made from the sale of the monolith given to a local charity and NOT for self gain. it was made for the people to view and enjoy and the proceeds should be given back to help worthy charities.
why?
it was made because some other people did the same thing in America. A local artist jumped on the bandwagon and built his own version.
it was brought from the national trust by a passing motorist. It is now his to do as he pleases with. If he donates to charity, that is his choice, not anyone elses.
frankly if he makes any money at all for a bit of plywood and some mirror foil, I would be amazed. Its not exactly a Banksy.
True what you say.
However, just seen on ebay the bid is up to £430 !
It’s £630 now.
Hope he does the decent thing and donates the money to an IOW charity.
Hes giving £100 away which is very generous. He shouldn’t be told what to do with his money
I wouldn’t give it house room, Dave! Even if it is modern…
