A lifeboat crew from Bembridge were tasked to the waters off Sandown earlier this afternoon (Saturday) to rescue a casualty aboard a cargo ship.
Bembridge RNLI’s All-weather lifeboat was first tasked to an anchored vessel off Sandown at around 15:30, following reports of a casualty in distress onboard ‘Friedrich’.
The vessel – sailing under the flag of Antigua and Barbuda – can carry 6,190 tonnes and measures 109m in length.
Having assessed the injured male, the lifeboat crew brought them back to Bembridge Lifeboat Station where Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team were waiting.
An Operational Commander and Critical Care Paramedic from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service are also on scene at Lane End, with the casualty being transferred to St Mary’s Hospital by land ambulance.
