Police are investigating the cause of a van fire in East Cowes on Monday (12th June) in order to establish whether it is connected with a spate of other arson attacks in the area.
As first reported by Island Echo, firefighters tackled the burning Ford Transit which was severely damaged when the fire broke out in a private car park at the top of Victoria Grove.
The fire also threatened the historic shed nearby which belonged to Christopher Cockerell – the inventor of the Hovercraft.
Now, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary have issued a statement saying that they believe the fire may have been caused deliberately.
A spokesperson for the Force has said:
“The Northeast Wight Neighbourhoods Policing Team will be making enquiries into this incident and establishing any links to previous incidents in this area.”
Anyone with information should contact police on 101, quoting 44230233810, or submit information via the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary website. Alternatively, you can contact independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, or via the online form.

If I owned a van of any value in East Cowes I’d fit covert 360 degree cameras that stream directly to ‘cloud’. Sooner or later someone will catch this dangerous moron, hopefully before someone gets killed.
Best option don’t go to East Cowes in the 1st place.
There are so many beautiful places on the Island, and East Cowes is not one of them.
And where do you suggest …hmmm Ryde , Newport etc etc …..i was born here and its changed for the worse rapidly over the last 15-20 years the place needs flushing to get rid of all the turds that dont belong , or wander the streets thinking the world owes them a living …the courts are useless as are the police ,if a normal civillian tries to do something they get scolded by the courts rather the snowflake criminal who gets protected …
historic shed!! i have one of them that needs to go. got it from B&Q for £240 in 2017 or should i insure it for £10’000
That shed was where Sir Christopher Cockerell did some of the tests when designing the hovercraft, hence historic.
Did you invent the Hovercraft? Hmmm, no, thought not….
I see after 6 months then the police have got fall done as usual..well done.
