Armed Police were deployed to a residential street in Brading last night (Thursday) amid reports of a woman waving a machete out of a flat window.
It was just after 17:15 that Police were alerted to a potential incident involving an offensive weapon at Lower Furlongs.
In light of the report received, firearms authorisation was given by the Incident Control Room and additional Armed Response Officers from the mainland were rushed across the Solent by a Ministry of Defence Police boat.
No less than 6 fully-clad officers arrived at the bottom end of Lower Furlongs and took up position surrounding a block of flats.
It had been reported that a woman had waved an object, a suspected machete, out of a window at individuals on the street below. It was part of a dispute.
Island Echo is told that officers made an approach to a mum-of-3, who is claimed to be a completely innocent party. There have been suggestions made that the report to Police was false.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary say that enquiries are continuing with officers speaking to all parties believed to have been involved to establish exactly what happened.
No arrests have been made at this time.

I trust that ‘officers talking to all parties believed to have been involved’ will include whoever authorised a posse of armed response blokes racing across the Solent without actually assessing the risk level and veracity of the situation. We seem to be getting an overkill (if you’ll excuse the expression) of over-reaction from emergency services of late, with multiple ambulances, fire engines, police cars and even helicopters turning up at relatively low-level incidents. Bad communications or the love of high drama engendered by today’s attitudes and misunderstanding of what constitutes a real emergency? Just askin’.
