Members of the media and local Conservative members were invited to a press conference at The Riverside Centre this morning where Mr Turner delivered his priorities for the coming years as he pushes forward with his election campaign for 2015, despite a smear campaign and calls for him to be deselected as a parliamentary candidate.
Mr Turner was supported by key figures in local politics including Cllr Ian Ward and Cllr Wayne Whittle, with words from Cllr Dave Stewart – who was unable to attend in person.
Cllr Ian Ward, chairman of the Isle of Wight Council, said that he was backing Andrew fully and that whenever he needs help, Andrew is the man he turns to. Cllr Ward continued to say that Andrew Turner holds the respect of thousands of Islanders. Meanwhile Cllr Wayne Whittle described Ryde’s support for Andrew Turner with positive feedback from the doorsteps of local residents, which was echoed by a Conservative Branch Member from Seaview who has experienced similar feedback in nearby Seaview.
Cllr Chris Whitehouse, who is part of Mr Turner’s campaign team, said that nothing but positive telephone calls and emails had been received and reminded those present that Mr Turner was voted parliamentarian of the year in 2014.
Responding to questions about whether or not the recent bad publicity has effected his campaign hopes, Mr Turner said the publicity is “like fish and chip wrappers – not relevant the day after”. He went on to say that he has no case to answer with regards to expenses claims, of which he has been cleared twice.
