Amy Kellard has taken silver in the 10,000 metres – the Isle of Wight’s first medal at the 2025 Orkney Island Games.
The Isle of Man’s Christa Cain took gold in the event in an Island Games record breaking time of 35:16.83, with Amy finishing the course in 37:35.82 – 2 minutes behind the gold medallist. Menorca’s Marina Bagur Olives took bronze in a photo finish for the silver medal with only 0.2 seconds separating 2nd and 3rd.
A further Isle of Wight competitor – Ellen Williams – finished the event in 8th place with a time of 39:18.88.
In other athletics events to have taken place on Sunday, Isle of Wight sprinter Sophie McCallum qualified for a semi final place in the 100metres in 13.05. Skyler Brown missed out on qualification by half-a-second in the same event.
In the 1500metres, the Isle of Wight’s Archibald Pearson is through to the final after qualifying in a time of 4:03.41, but teammate Noah Patey missed out on a final spot with a time of 4:15.60.
2 Isle of Wight athlets competed in the high jump: Charles Button came 6th after clearing 1.89; Jacob Patey was 9th with a jump of 1.74. Charles’ jump was 8 centimetres below that of gold medallist Regan Corrin from the Isle of Man, who cleared 1.97.
In the triathlon, the Isle of Wight’s Darren Cole, Chris Till and Henry Morgan came 6th in the team event with a combined time of 06:58:36. Darren was our highest placed individual triathlete, coming 20th in a field of 52 with a time of 02:17:04.
The Isle of Wight women’s football team opened their campaign with a 2-2 draw against the Shetland Islands. The Isle of Wight scorers were Millie Tinsley (with a 30-yard lob) and Thea Broadhead. Our side then proceeded to beat the Shetlanders 4-3 on penalties.
Today (Monday), the Isle of Wight women face Bermuda.
The Isle of Wight badminton team began Sunday brightly with a 5-0 thrashing of the Western Isles, following which they comfortably saw off the Falkland Islands 4-1. However, they then finished the day with a disappointing 0-5 defeat at the hands of Greenland to finish 2nd in Group B. The Isle of Wight face the hosts Orkney today (Monday).
The Isle of Wight have got off to a fantastic start in the sailing with Oliver Smith joint top of the ILCA 6 event after coming 2nd and then 1st in Sunday’s races and Arthur Farley topping the table in ILCA 7 with 2 straight wins.
The Isle of Wight have finished Day 2 joint 6th in the medals table together with Gibraltar and Gotland, with all 3 Islands having a silver medal apiece. Jersey currently lead the table with 3 golds.
