An alcohol dependent Godshill woman who was stopped by Police in Newport Town Centre last month has been banned from driving for 20 months.
Sharon Waghorn, 52, of Sheepwash Lane in Godshill pleaded guilty to drink driving when she appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Tuesday (1st August).
Ann Smout, prosecuting, told the court that at 08:30 on 17th July, Police were given information that the driver of a Kia Sorrento may be under the influence of alcohol.
Officers from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary saw Waghorn driving the vehicle along Church Litten in Newport, having seen her driving along Medina Avenue.
Police activated blue lights and stopped the vehicle, noticing that Waghorn smelt strongly of alcohol as she stepped out of the vehicle.
The 52-year-old failed a roadside breath test and failed a further test conducted at Newport Police Station. The lowest recorded reading returned a result of 77 – the legal limit is 35.
Defending, Barry Arnett said that his client had admitted that she was alcohol dependent adding that the mum-of-3 had started attending Alcoholics Anonymous after the incident.
Magistrates handed Waghorn a 20-month driving ban and ordered her to pay a fine of £253, costs of £85 and a £101 surcharge fee.

Are her kids being looked after properly?
Let’s hope so Zed.
Point proven again by old farts should not drive there a danger
52 is not an ‘old fart’.
Anything over 50’s is a old fart you live most of your life now time to lay to rest
You might be lucky enough to reach that age one day, if you change your attitude.
Ignore Kev. He has special needs that are not being met…
Zed please stop showing your pecker to your kids it’s wrong
If someone is alcohol dependent at today’s prices, they must be on very good wages or buying it with free handouts. Very few people working people have enough money left to be dependent on it. Why are so many people given so much money for free, to by drugs and swill with, when working people only bring home half as much for grafting for it. Something seriously not right here.
If you can’t afford to be an alcoholic maybe you should get a job
Eat mushys. Free from the land;)
How do you know she’s not working? Mums work nowadays, you do realise that?
There is no excuses for drink driving, instant imprisonment is the only way to stop these
Morons.
Cowboy builder Paul you need to stop with your bad work
Surely the fact she went to AA after the incident and arrest says something…
At least she has reached out and recognised she has a problem and joined AA. Let’s hope she can kick this cruel addiction.
“alcohol dependent Godshill woman” is woke speak for alcoholic old slapper.
Misogynist much?
Wait… a drunk 19yo on scooter last Christmas got a 12 months ban. And you’re telling me she with her car that weighs 200x more and has 6x faster max speed got only 20 months? I’d assume it’s going to be minimum of 1200 years ban based on how much more dangerous the vehicle is.
Wonder if it will stop her fox hunting now?
The fact she’s a teacher to
Isn’t she related to the head of Carisbrooke college?
No she isn’t.
Great role model. Ffs.
I recognise her name as someone possibly involved in fox hunting. Because of that, if it’s true, she can rot for all I care. She’ll find it very difficult to get insured after her ban is over. She deserves zero sympathy. The only people I feel sorry for are the children she’s supposed to be a role model for. If she reoffends, lock her up and throw the key away.
