Emergency services are rushing to Shanklin Seafront following reports of a person being dragged out of the water in cardiac arrest this afternoon (Thursday).
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service, HM Coastguard and Police have all been mobilised to the scene.
The Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance is currently inbound from its base in Andover. Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 175 from Lee-on-Solent is also proceeding towards the incident.
Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team and Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team are both in attendance and are working to clear beachgoers from the crowded sands to create a landing area.
UPDATE @ 17:10 – A 72-year-old man has sadly died following this afternoon’s incident at Shanklin.
The gentleman was enjoying a day at the seaside with this family when tragedy struck.
Despite the best and prolonged efforts of all emergency services, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Family members watched on as teams battled to save the man’s life.
Hampshire Constabulary have thanked members of the public for their cooperation, with a crowded beach very quickly cleared to allow for the landing of the air ambulance and the Coastguard helicopter. The crowds of people were ushered to the other side of the road in the interests of safety.
The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file is being prepared for the coroner.
Best wishes hope person involved is ok.
Hope they manage to clear the beach quickly it’ll be packed. Loads of sirens going everywhere. Hope they manage to help the poor person.
