Police, fire and ambulance crews have been called to an incident in Newchurch this afternoon (Tuesday), alongside the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance.
Multiple police units and ambulances were seen responding to the area at around 16:30.
High Street – the main road through the village – is currently closed in both directions between Harbors Lake Lane and The Shute.
The incident, which is understood to have involved a vehicle, has occurred near to The Pointer Inn.
Traffic is extremely heavy in the area with motorists having to divert via Sandown or Arreton.
UPDATE @ 17:40 – Island Echo has been told that a young female, of unknown age, has been run over and trapped by a vehicle on a residential driveway.
The air ambulance, which has landed in a nearby field, remains on scene alongside police.
Fire crews have now stood down from the incident.
UPDATE @ 18:35 – The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance has now left the scene but has not conveyed any patients to hospital.
It is thought that the vehicle involved reversed into the female.
UPDATE @ 20:00 – The main road through Newchurch has now reopened to all traffic.
Police remain on scene at the property at the centre of this evening’s incident.
The Collision Investigation Unit from the mainland have been requested to attend and are due to arrive shortly.
In a statement, a spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary has said:
“We were alerted at about 4.30pm by the IOW ambulance service.
“A female was trapped between a car (Toyota Yaris) and fence in a serious condition. The Fire service was also called to the scene.
“Road closures were put in place. Officers are still at the scene”.
How awful, to crush a member of your own family. Lets hope they can make a full recovery.
