New figures have forecasted an overspend of more than £815,000 on adult social care on the Isle of Wight.
County Hall is currently predicting an £815,971 ASC budget end-of-year overspend, with a performance report showing the number of people supported by the services is on the rise.
The findings have been published in advance of an adult social care, public health and housing needs committee meeting this evening (Thursday).
Councillors are set to review the performance of the adult social care and housing needs directorate – the biggest department within the Island’s local authority with an annual budget of over £74million.
A committee report says:
“In addition to delivering the council’s statutory duties in relation to adult social care and housing needs the directorate provides activities that promote, improve and maintain independence for Island residents as well as supporting local people to live well, in the place that they call home in the communities that they have chosen.
“In general, the Key Performance Indicators are showing an upward trend in the number of people who are supported by the directorate and a decrease in the time people have to wait to access care and support.
“Key challenges in performance continue to be in access to occupational therapy assessments and a service improvement plan is in place.
“At the current time, the adult social care budget is forecasting an end of year overspend of £815,971.
“This is linked to increases in the unit price of residential and nursing care linked to the acuity and complexity of people’s needs as well as increasing provider fees and charges together with the ongoing higher cost of supporting people leaving hospital.”
The adult social care, public health and housing needs committee is due to meet at 17:00.

it’s ok starmer gives billions to other countries..i’m sure he’ll help out..
The pot is running dry, just wait until Rachel’s next budget
Amen
Just like BoJo the Clown, Truss, Sunak helped?
Yes, as per our international obligations which are the same in most other countries. HOWEVER, this government has reduced our contributions by over 50%. Even at previous levels, social care contributions (mainly elderly) was DOUBLE what we were giving in aid. Why don’t you do some research before silly comments? And then see if you can work out why?
No wonder our council tax keeps going up!
make some cuts, instead of pandering to every freeloader going
Well maybe some of the big fat cats on the council can help sustain by dropping their over paid wallets . It’s a start .
Reduce the workforce, if shirking from home
are the employees really needed.
People need to understand that adult social care and children’s services are not items the council can pick nd choose about providing or withhold in order to keep the Council Tax bill down. They have a statutory obligation to provide these services and they account for approximately 85% of all council spending across the whole country. You may not personally agree with the expenditure but the local authority has no choice – the law requires them to make this provision.
Interesting that the overspend is about the same as the council spends on one disturbed child being looked after.
