3 men from Southampton have been charged with burglary after a quantity of cash was stolen during a break-in at the Co-Op in Shanklin on Sunday night. As first reported by Island Echo, Police cordoned off the supermarket on Landguard Road after several individuals gained entry to the store at 22:53 on 25th February. Entry was forced through the front doors. Island Echo can reveal that 3 people were subsequently arrested by Police on the High Street in Cowes – near the Red Jet – at just gone 09:00 on Monday morning, less than 12 hours after the store was targetted. Now, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed that 41-year-old George Mason of Kingsdown Way, 37-year-old Danny Kernaghan of Golden Grove and 33-year-old Robert Mandair of Cossack Green – all from Southampton – have been charged with burglary other than dwelling.
The trio appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court yesterday (Tuesday). No pleas were entered. Danny Kernaghan – who is also charged with failing to provide – has been remanded in custody, with Robert Mandair and George Mason granted conditional bail. Mason is also accused of driving without a licence and insurance. The 3 men will all appear before the Isle of Wight Crown Court on 8th April. These charges come less than 2 weeks after 2 other men from Southampton – 37-year-old Thomas Paul Edward Weller and 33-year-old Billy Craig Connis – were charged in connection with a similar burglary at the Co-Op in Sandown. On this occasion, some £5,000 was stolen. A large amount of cash was stolen from the Co-Op in East Cowes back in January.
