Heavy congestion in Newport is expected to continue into rush hour this evening (Wednesday) as a 2 car collision has seen traffic backed up to St Mary’s Hospital on the Southbound carriageway.
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service is in attendance at this afternoon’s crash – believed to be the 2nd on the dual carriageway’s slip road in as many days.
It comes as Fairlee Road became 1-way earlier today, due to the Isle of Wight Festival, further affecting traffic in the area.
Significant delays around the County Town are now expected into this evening.
UPDATE @ 16:43 – Southern Vectis have said that there are delays getting in and out of Newport Bus Station.
Significant delays have also been reported on Newport Road towards the Floating Bridge.

Traffic was bad enough after shutting the slip road before the accident, why shut it so early at least keep it open until all the commuters have got home .
7pm would of been better as the festival Dont begin until tomorrow ,Thursday, getting busy
Festival causing mayhem again and again AND AGAIN
Some people have been in a que for half an hour to get to the slip road on duel carriageway from industrial estate, im not suprised there hasnt been more accidents,it has been chaos all day getting in and out of newport, why shut certain roads on a weds when festival doesnt start till thurs night!!, i noticed that some roads off staplers were shut early morning when the traffic build up was so bad they were then re-opened, some of us have to get to work and back come on you shambles of a council get a grip!!
The F***ing council will be out of power next time round, they’re corrupt, just like government…..no matter what colour they are…..Why do we have to vote for these idiots….
My voting days are over.
All a bunch of useless B’stards
I totally agree.
Just booked a day return in June from Island to Portsmouth on Wightlink
car and 2 persons £70
What the F*ck does the Island “incompetent” MP do to help us
Islanders.
Soon it will cost £100+ for a day return
I too will not be voting
If you choose not to vote, you lose the right to complain about MPs and the way the place is being run.
I dread to think what the environmental impact is of all this .let alone the cost of the lost man hours trying to commute. Every year it’s a shambles , also many of us living here neither can afford to attend or have the time off work to do so . This is disruption on a big scale for a festival for so few that brings very little to the island economy overall .
Sounds like terrible transportation network if one festival causes so many headaches. Are there many alternatives to driving during that time? Trains, cycling, that sort of stuff? Those could be especially helpful for those who can’t afford things as you said it so I guess those links must be fairly well developed and encouraged by local community compared to expensive cars?
The biggest problem is holding the festival where they do . We are blessed with many wide open large spaces on this island it should be held in one of those . I’m a fan of live music as much as anyone (pubs etc) but this event is way too large to be where it is . Our transport network is not brilliant and congestion from all the festival goers arriving by car ,which is cheaper than travelling on foot and being ripped of on buses ,adds to the problem
East Afton perhaps?!
You obviously don’t know the Isle of Wight very well, if at all lol
The problem is commuters are unable to get out of Newport too catch the local train at Ryde!
Get the train to go back to Newport that would serve thousands during this weekend and I’m sure it would do pretty well during the year too.
Fun vacuum…. Shall we bring back puritanism? Or, maybe stop everything that you can’t afford?
Old people causing trouble on roads again
Yep ♂️
Bring a congestion charge to Newport
Newport is to congested
Please tell me you are kidding?
Great way to make extra money and improve infrastructure, also
reduce unhealthy pollution in Newport.
Since they also changed Sandown lane to right I am surprised not more accidents, often impossible to come up slip road (even at top) and get in right lane , no one lets people in ,( law states only give way to right) so you have to go up staplers and through Pan or over to Robin Hill, Arreton to get to Sandown road. Used to work fine before – except for few idiots. What I don’t get is why Police drag it out and don’t get themselves out of way,we can get round the involved vehicles,as people did before Police arrived. Hope all are ok.
So many miserable bas***** on here. Its on for a few day’s. There’s plenty of notice. Make alternative arrangements and stay well clear if you don’t like it! I have lady nr hospice who’s hair I do; we just leave it a week. I’ve taken thos week off. And before u shout:- I only take 3 wks holiday a year cause I’m self employed
A few days that cost some people ,who are not interested , a lot of money , it needs to be moved else where less inconveniencing ……
‘Make alternative arrangements’
And what might those alternative arrangements be? Take a week off work? That’s ok for people like you, a mobile hairdresser, who can work as and when they please, but the majority of us can’t.
Just consider for a moment an employer in Newport and half the staff ask for the same week off in June because the festival is on, what do you think the answer might be?
Think about other people apart from yourself.
A lot of drivers dont even know how to use the slip road properly …
That’s what happens when you hold a festival alongside a main arterial road. Should have been sited where the Freshwater festivasl was held.
Thats because people don’t know how to join the dual carriageway and just pull straight out, rather than using the full slipway then pulling out. Seen it multiple times
I think it’s pretty clear that the festival is in the wrong place.
Yes, I think we should have the festival on the Island, but there’s plenty of open spaces in the south and west of the Island where we wouldn’t have to shut down roads and put in diversions. And the people who live here would be able to get to work or get into town for whatever reason.
But, moving it would mean the Council would have to admit they made a mistake and I can’t see that happening.
IDK why people are so up in arms about festival traffic… I took 4 and then 9 to Monkey Haven on Staplers and it was fine. Just go there instead of Fairlee for a few days? It doesn’t take that much longer.
(Although so admit Staplers is horribly dangerous to anyone outside a 3-tonne metal box including families crossing the street from bus stops: there’s no protected pavement or pass so if speeding driver as little as sneezes, you’re probably dead but hey… guess thaaaaat’s Britain 2023.)
Oh please shut up Susan you boring person
