UPDATED: Those travelling with Wightlink via their Fishbourne car ferry service are facing delays of 2 hours this evening (Friday) due to a mechanical problem.
Not only are customers facing significant delays at both the Portsmouth Gurnwharf and Fishbourne ferry terminals, but the backlog of vehicles has resulted in significant delays for Islanders travelling between Ryde and Newport.
Island Echo readers have vented their anger at the situation, calling for Police to intervene to get traffic moving on the A3056 through Wootton. The traffic is said to be at a standstill, although is expected to ease as the evening progresses.
Southern Vectis buses are reported to be diverting via The Downs to avoid the lengthy tailbacks.
The cross-Solent operator have not provided any further details on the cause of the delays.
Meanwhile Wightlink’s Yarmouth-Lymington car ferry service is delayed by 20 minutes due to a medical emergency.
UPDATE @ 19:10 – Traffic between Ryde and Newport has now subsided following the rush hour traffic, however the delays to Wightlink’s services remain.
UPDATE SATURDAY @ 00:30 – Wightlink services are now operating to timetable.
Island Echo understands a problem with the link span at Portsmouth Gunwharf was to blame for the delays, which included causing damage to a coach.
