Firefighters have tackled a bin store fire in the heart of Ventnor town this evening (Wednesday).
2 appliances from Shanklin and Sandown were mobilised to the scene on Pound Lane at around 17:35, with crews arriving to find a bin well alight.
2 hose reels have been used to dowse the flames and damp down the immediate area.
This latest incident comes following a recent spate of small fires and fires in the open across the Island.
Earlier on today, Blue Watch at Newport Fire Station were mobilised to reports of a fire in the open in Newport, which turned out to be a controlled bonfire. Soon after, they were mobilised to Brading Downs but this turned out to be a false alarm with good intent.

It would seem by the amount of fires happening on the island lately, we should rename the island, Isle of Fire..
Having said that, I expect we will have to change the name of the Isle of ‘WIGHT” one day because the far left snow flakes will be upset claiming the name is racist…
My country is not allow in these race. We is not have bad problems like here and other EU land who is let them in. Show to me that way is to go. Not coincident less in less crime.
Only if they can’t spell, though.
I’d just like to throw a correction, I was one of the people who phoned the fire brigade and only one unit was actually used though two turned out, the fire was out within 20 minutes and it did seem to be a deliberate fire due to binbags not being taken by the binmen…
I was out of the back of where I work about half hour before I spotted the smoke out of the back doors, and there was nothing going on… There were plenty of bangs when the bags were burning though! Definitely deodorant/aerosol cans… Mother-in-law heard the bangs from the dentist next to the motorbike shop!
If this report is correct, it’s a pretty poor show that appliances from other towns were turned out for this job. Ventnor station is less than a minute away! What if it was a much bigger job with “persons reported”? I speak as a former retained fireman in Ventnor. I can’t remember a single occasion when we didn’t have enough crew to turn out. It’s rather worrying.
I think you will find that Ventnor were already out on a shout to Brighstone.
Fair enough.
