A 2-car crash is causing delays on the main Newport to Ryde road at Binstead this afternoon (Thursday).
A silver Toyota Yaris and an orange Ford Fusion have been involved in a minor crash at the junction of Pitts Lane.
One side of the carriageway is blocked – heading into Ryde – leading to traffic queues up Binstead Hill towards Quarr.
Police are on scene and the road remains open, but motorists should avoid the area if possible.
The Downs Road between Ryde and Downend has re-opened in the past 15 minutes.

How many is that today? What time is the next one scheduled for?
17:00
Only three, so far, but there’s lots of time yet.
Any time now, be patient, another one coming along soon..
Nobody has tipped their car on its side today so there’s definitely got to be at least one more.
So many accidents because of increased traffic on the island. What will the roads be like once all the housing developments are built and we have many more people and cars here…… Chaos and accidents everyday, that’s what. Traffic jams just like the mainland when wanting to travel anywhere.
It will be quicker to walk !!
Mmmm yes I think it would!
probably safer too.
Don’t forget the bridge
When will this damn council realise that the Island cannot cope with a huge influx of cars from the mainland. Not only that but the cars are just getting bigger and bigger.
Totally. Thd amount of times I’m squished into a hedge by a huge car, is ridiculous. Always going fast and refusing to move over. I’ve only a little Dawoo too.. plus parking, where you used to be able to drive past easily it’s a lot harder
The Island can cope … what it cant cope with is the idiots that are driving them. And i use the word driving very loosely, its more point and shoot at the moment and not steer and correct.
You are all firing at the wrong target, the blame is squarely with central government for years of cutting the amount they pay to local governments in the name of austerity. What are they supposed to do to make up the short fall? They have pruned what they can, a few more “top jobs” won’t make any difference, they have cut services to the bone, they could raise the council tax a bit more, bet that would be met with more complaints here, so they build more houses to raise more council tax, and still they get moaned at. I am not sticking up for them, it’s central government that needs changing, none of the others would do any different, so, Constructive ideas please.
What the hell has this got to do with the poor standard of driving witnessed on the island and the cause of most RTC’s here.
Wait until the Island TT gets here…. bring it on
Please masks to be worn over the mouth and nose not the eyes
Isle of wight must have the world’s most useless drivers going by the amount of RTA’s…
I don’t know how half of them ever passed their driving test! Anyone can put their foot down & drive too fast for the roads on the island. What happened to driving with due care & attention?
Too difficult to prove, so don’t bother
I was on the no 9 coming back from Newport. So so hot! But glad no one was hurt in crash.
Wait until Penny Feathers is built and filled to capacity, along with Bullen and many other masse building here.
The Island will not be ruined for a while, but forever. Enjoy the so few sunny, quite times left.
How bad are road are NOW in the Summer, will be like this in Winter, and Summer will be Hell here once built to ruination.
Fear not, the Council planners and developers will NOT be living anywhere near the daily misery they profitably create for others.
These accidents have very little to with congestion, the amount of vehicles being driven off quiet roads into ditches is unreal for such a small populated place…They are mainly down to incompetent impatient drivers or some other form of impairment…
This accident had everything to do with traffic congestion and no vehicles were driven off any quiet roads in to a ditch.
Well if you can’t drive in congested traffic you should not be driving on the roads at all…The driving test is a measure of competency which many do not appear to have mastered lol
I’m not arguing with that, just trying to keep to the facts.
It’s due to driver error/incompetence. Nothing to do with congestion, more to the fact, it CAUSED congestion.
If it was congested then vehicles would be moving slower so you adapt your driving to the conditions so i find your comment pretty pointless to be honest.
You say ‘Wednesday’ is today. But today is Thursday. Well done. Top reporting.
Also an accident near Arreton Barns today (THURSDAY).
The driving on this Island from people born here is shocking. Why are so called ‘mainlanders’ always blamed? I live here too but work up and down the country and have never come across a place so inept at driving. Roundabouts seem to be a mystery to most, two lane traffic (dual carriageway) is uncomprehending. All the people who moan on here are probably just as bad to be quite frank. I would like to see an islander, for example, tow a caravan in France, Italy or the Isle of Wight.
Wait until there is a fixed link. Mainland motorway to the island. There will not be many crashes due to the gridlock.
There will not be a fixed link….. Not in our lifetime anyway. Worry about the LARGE housing developments that will get underway with building next year…. Bloody ridiculous, will ruin this lovely island forevermore
Why we need a bridge to escape
I have already commented earlier on the article regarding the Nettlestone incident but i’m sorry to say that you cannot blame all these incidents on congestion. The circumstances across them is too varied. It comes down to people either not concentrating, driving irresponsibly or lacking basic common sense or road courtesy. You also cannot blame it all on Island visitors, recent reports have shown that there are enough idiot drivers living amongst us.
My point exactly, the driving here is shocking as is the parking. You cannot leave your car in any car park and not expect it to get damaged. Watch in Tesco’s and count to ten – you will undoubtably witness a scrape or near pedestrian miss!
Ziggy, don’t get me started on Island residents parking at supermarkets!
Three road accidents today, and all of them occurred close to bus stops. Curious.
In the old days we just push the cars to one side if no injuries. Now you need all the 1st emergency units.
Could they not have moved them? Take pictures on phone, move cars, no delays. Seem to be just stood there talking.
