A staggering 16 incidents of deliberate cruelty against dogs was recorded on the Isle of Wight last year, according to the RSCPA.
As part of its Cancel Out Cruelty campaign, the RSPCA is releasing new figures today that highlight how – despite being called ‘man’s best friend’ – dogs are the most likely pet to be abused by their owners.
Over 4 years (2016-2020), 63,881 incidents of intentional harm involving dogs were reported to the RSPCA’s cruelty line; that’s 34 a day or more than 1 every hour across England and Wales. In 2020, 7,691 reports of intentional harm against dogs were reported to the RSPCA and, over summer (June – August) in particular, the charity received 2,053 reports.
The campaign aims to raise funds to keep its rescue teams on the frontline saving animals in desperate need of help as well as raise awareness about how we can all work together to stamp out cruelty for good.
The RSPCA gets around 84,000 calls to its cruelty line every month and around 1,500 of those are about intentional cruelty. But the charity sees a rise in the summer by around 400 calls, on average, per month, which equates to 47 calls every day or 2 every hour.

What goes around, comes around.
Far too many vile types of people allowed to have dogs. And if ever caught and convicted, should get life long ban from ever being near anymore, not just a few years ban and then free to get more, even if they actually bothered to wait that long before they do; Those sort of people don’t exactly abide by rules and regulations and breaking the law to them is just something they do on a daily basis anyway in one way or another.
A section of the community flout regulations and break the law as you say on a daily basis
These same people who abuse animals are likely to abuse drink or drugs, dump litter, be generally disruptive to society and steal from shops.
They tend to have strings of convictions but it has no effect on them as they do not perceive trivial punishments as a deterrent.
The only deterrent is very harsh sentencing.
In the case of animal abuse a lifetime ban is absolutely essential .
They are unlikely to ever change.
Would have been a lot more than that if the RSPCA didn’t refuse to attend suffering animals for the last 9 months of last year due to ” we have laid everyone off due to lack of funds” .
People who abuse any animal are vile, sick individuals. The law has now changed regarding cruelty to animals. These b*stards will get what’s coming to them. Makes me so angry. Can’t stand anyone who thinks it’s ok to abuse, starve, fight, shoot any animal. Such a bonus we have the RSPCA removing these poor animals from uncaring owners, taking them in, bringing them back to health and then finding them LOVING new homes.
What kind of human CREATURE would harm an animal that would show you love and be happy every day to see you no matter how its treated.
These people should be banned from ever keeping any form of pet and serve a prison sentence.
Please shame and tell if you see cruelty or suspect it.
