10 members of an Isle of Wight diving club have successfully qualified as Ocean Divers following months of theory, swimming pool sessions and open water dives around the Island and further afield.
Wight Dolphins Sub Aqua Club has welcomed Maddie Adamson, Shaun Channing, Lucie Johnson, Steve Johnson, William Johnson, Kim Kirby, Mike Montgomery, Hannah Ottley, Katie Ould and Laura Westmore as its latest qualified divers.
The group completed the British Sub-Aqua Club (BSAC) Ocean Diver course with the club’s training team over several months.
Ocean Diver is BSAC’s entry-level open water diving qualification and allows those who successfully complete the course to dive to a maximum depth of 20m in open water.
Training began with 6 theory lessons followed by an assessment, before each member completed 5 sheltered water sessions.
These took place at West Wight Sports and Community Centre in Freshwater throughout the winter months, giving the trainees an opportunity to develop their skills and confidence before heading into open water.
Open water training began in May 2026 under the supervision of Wight Dolphins instructors.
The group completed a number of dives at Vobster Quay as well as at various sites around the Isle of Wight.
Training took place both from the shore and from the club’s boat, with all 10 eventually completing the requirements needed to secure their Ocean Diver qualification.
The newly qualified divers can now use their qualification to dive at locations around the world.
Several members of the group are already looking to develop their skills further and have started working towards the next level – the BSAC Sports Diver qualification – with Wight Dolphins.
The club is also encouraging other Islanders interested in exploring beneath the waves to consider taking up diving.
