PHOTO GALLERY: A parade of colour and diversity passed through the streets of Ryde this afternoon (Saturday) in celebration of 70 years of India’s independence.

The Mardi Gras was rained off last year when thunderstorms moved in, but the sun shone brightly for the 2017 Reflections of India parade which saw hundreds of participants from across 34 groups take part.

Thousands of spectators lined the entire route between Ryde School, down through the town and along the Esplanade to the Eastern Gardens, making the efforts of The New Carnival Company and the many groups and organisations involved very worth while indeed.

Classic India, Imperial India and Modern India were represented throughout with emphasis on Queen Victoria’s connection with the country, the transport of India and even the Bollywood film industry. The theme has been incorporated into local school curriculums with students learning a variety of different aspects of India’s history and way of life.
