7-year-old Finley Grundy produced a storming performance to win the Under 9 Boys category at the 417 Fly UPS Downhill Race Series in Gloucestershire on Sunday (14th September).
Racing in brutal 40mph winds and heavy showers, the young Wightlink-sponsored mountain biker dominated the technical, high-speed course—finishing 4 seconds clear of his nearest rival.
His first run, set in slightly calmer conditions, was not only the fastest of the day for his category but quick enough to have won the Under 11 Boys race too. Despite worsening weather, Finley’s second run was just half a second off his earlier pace, even after a near-slide on a slippery corner.
The result puts Finley top of the series standings with just one round remaining—and with the Shanklin rider only recently turning seven, he’ll still be eligible to compete in the Under 9 class next season.
Finley’s father said:
“Finley is gaining in confidence with every race and this was evident today as his times were the fastest ever recorded for his age group on this course, which was even more impressive considering the conditions!
Finley really enjoyed the racing and we’re so proud of him.”
