A young Island family have lost everything following a fire at their home in Newport this afternoon (Thursday), prompting friends and family to launch a fundraising appeal.
Charlotte and Nathan Goldsmith and their two young boys – aged 6 and 2 – have recovered just 2 bags of possessions from their Cross Lane home after a blaze broke out in their living room at just before 16:00.
Although the fire was largely contained, almost everything inside the building has been smoke damaged and is unsalvageable, according to the family. The children have lost their clothes and toys.
The family-of-4, who moved into their home just 2 months ago, are now homeless. Other family members have stepped in to provide temporary accommodation. The British Red Cross Fire and Emergency Support unit are also providing assistance.
A GoFundMe fundraising page has been set up by Charlotte’s sister, Laura at https://www.gofundme.com/2c59778.
Laura says:
“If anyone could help in anyway, anything would be appreciated”.
UPDATE FRIDAY – More than £2,000 has already been raised by the appeal, with clothes and other donations also made.
Boots have stepped in to supply toiletries, whilst Sainsbury’s have donated clothes.
Showing their appreciation, fundraiser Laura has said:
“We’ve been absolutely overwhelmed by the response. Thank you so much guys”.
