A teenager who was stopped by Police whilst riding around Ryde on her moped with drugs in her system has been banned from the roads for 12 months.
Sherry-Leigh Gallagher, 19, of George Street in Ryde pleaded guilty to a single charge when she appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court earlier this week (Tuesday).
Lauren Stone, prosecuting, told the court that at around 19:00 on 19th May 2023, Police on patrol in Ryde saw a convoy of motorcycles. Some of the riders were known to Police as cannabis users.
Having caught up with some of the group on St Vincent’s Road in the town, Police ordered Gallagher – who had been driving around on her 49cc Piaggio Zip – to conduct a roadside drugs wipe, which returned a positive result for cannabis.
The 19-year-old was taken to Newport Police Station where a further test in blood was carried out. This returned a THC reading (cannabis breakdown product) of 3.7 microgrammes, above the legal limit of 2.0.
Defending, Michael McGoldrick said that his client uses cannabis to help with underlying health conditions and some family issues that the 19-year-old is currently in the middle of.
Magistrates handed the 19-year-old a 12-month driving ban. She was also ordered to pay an £80 fine, costs of £85 and a £32 surcharge fee.

Is cannabis not a herb and a free wild plant? What riot or murder was started due to the use of such??
These stories make you want to try it cos something wierd is going on!!!
“Defending, Michael McGoldrick said that his client uses cannabis to help with underlying health conditions and some family issues that the 19-year-old is currently in the middle of. ” So now got arrested, Court, Ban and named and shamed etc . Sorry but does Cannabis really help you’re mental health – I think NOT.
What happened to the others that police recognised?
At least the Magistrates didn’t fall for the standard excuse offered by the defence.
I got family issues I don’t use drugs…. Funny that!
Poor excuse!
“his client uses cannabis to help with underlying health conditions”
So don’t drive. From time to time I have to take meds that mean I should not drive, so I do not.
That convoy of bikes they stopped, some of the bikes were not legal to use on the road. May have had the paper work but changing the exhaust for a very loud one, not correctly fitting L plates and moving the number plate so it is no longer that last part of the bike means they are no longer legal for the road. But most police don’t know this. Time to educate them or get some road policing police that do know the rules.
just anther day in ryde
stabbing these “people” is illegal why?
I agree with the comment about taking prescription drugs that make you drowsy, so don’t drive then! Simples! Or this daft xxxx is anyway.
Could kill somebody or is that not important. Sorry ridiculous excuses as per ….
