UPDATED: A wood chipper has burst into flames on Knighton Shute, forcing the closure of the road in both directions this evening (Monday).
1 fire appliance from Ryde is currently in attendance on the road off The Downs, where the trailer unit caught alight at just before 17:10.
Firefighters using breathing apparatus and a hose reel have extinguished the blaze but due to a spillage on the carriageway the road remains closed.
Thankfully, the driver managed to unhitch his 4×4 vehicle before the flames could take hold.
Island Roads have been called to the scene and as a result the road is likely to remain closed for sometime.
UPDATE – Witnesses have described to Island Echo how the trailer caught light on one side of the carriageway, before fuel explosions rolled it onto the opposite side of the road.
The diesel spill has now been cleared and the road has reopened.
