Police have confirmed the death of a woman in her 50s after she ‘jumped’ from a cliff top in Sandown yesterday morning (Thursday).
Emergency services rushed to the revetment between Sandown and Shanklin at just gone 09:05, but nothing could be done to save the woman’s life.
Island Echo understands staff at nearby Fin’s beach cafe heard a noise outside, prompting them to investigate. Sadly, they discovered the woman’s body at the base of the cliff.
The popular seaside eatery has remained closed today in the wake of yesterday’s tragic incident, but have said that if anyone is struggling, their doors are always open – for coffee, for comfort, for conversation.
Police erected cordons for a time, both on the revetment and on the cliff path, as officers investigated the circumstances of the sudden death, as previously reported by Island Echo.
Mystery initially surrounded the woman’s identity, but following efforts by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary, the death has now been confirmed.
A spokesperson for the force has said:
‘We were called at 9:08am yesterday morning (Thursday 20 November) to reports that a woman in her 50s had been found on the promenade of Sandown seafront.
‘We attended along with our colleagues from Isle of Wight Ambulance Service who confirmed that the woman had died.
‘Her next of kin have been informed”.
A file will now be prepared for the coroner in relation to the woman’s unexpected death.
Flowers have been laid at the scene.

There is no help with mental health. Phoning for a family member ambulance control.. Are they conscious and breathing? Family member then swears, Eventually phone transfer to Crisis unit. Which goes press 1 for.press 2 for etc etc. Press a number. Guess what?.. phone line goes dead. Very much like broken Britain.
This is another truly heartbreaking reflection of the harsh and cruel world we live in. There is no help for anyone if they are down on their luck. Generally people are down on their luck due to ridiculous government rules and guidelines which add up to going round in circles a few or more broken promises and nothing gained. No housing no mental health help.no help at all. I called the emergency helpline for a lady clearly in crisis on a Newport street it went to answer phone!!!! How can that ever be called a crisis service ?? Please remember not everyone has a family network that cares that is another sad fact of todays way of life.
Last year I phoned the Samaritans on behalf of somebody I was very worried about. It went straight to answerphone. I left a message and nobody called back.
