A woman who was so fed up of waiting for her husband that she drove off without him, despite not having the appropriate licence and insurance, was then involved in a serious collision, a court has heard.
Arjeta Azemi, 32, of Great Preston Road in Ryde pleaded guilty to being a driver involved in a road accident and failing to report that accident, driving without third party insurance and driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence when she appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Friday.
As previously reported by Island Echo, the incident occurred on the afternoon of 7th March when Azemi – driving a black Volkswagen Golf – collided with Mr Daniel Thorpe who was riding his Yamaha motorcycle on High Park Road in Ryde.
Liz Miller, prosecuting, told the court that Azemi immediately fled from the scene with her child and failed to pass over her details, nor did she inform the Police. Furthermore, Azemi was not in the car with a qualified driver and the car didn’t have the correct ‘L’ plates on it.
She was arrested around 45 minutes after the incident at her home address and when questioned by Police, it was found that she didn’t have insurance and was driving on a provisional licence too.
The other driver – Daniel Thorpe of Cross Street in Oakfield – pleaded guilty to driving his motorbike whilst under the influence of Benzoylecgonine, a breakdown of cocaine, in court on Tuesday. It was heard in court on Friday during Azemi’s case that the crash was Thorpe’s fault, not hers.
In defence, Henry Farley said that his client was due to go out in the car with her husband – who can drive – but decided she was going to head out on her own after he took too long to get ready. He also said that the 32-year-old, who works at a car wash was a ‘hard-working and self-reliant person who has made the worst mistake of her life’.
Arjeta Azemi was handed a 12-month community order with 150 hours of unpaid work as well as being handed 10 points on her licence. She was ordered to pay £85 costs and a £95 surcharge fee.

Even a provisional license holder can be given a driving ban, as can someone who has no licence at all. It means they would have to wait until the ban ends before they can apply for a licence.
Obviously breaking the law but 10 Points were a bit harsh when she wasn’t guilty of any actual driving offence, just bad luck to be hit by a junkie.
Agreed she might well be able to drive ok and was maybe due to take test, ( not sure those that pass can drive as cause the majority of accidents) others will find they don’t have insurance cover – over the mileage limit, comuting to work, carrying DIY stuff, taking rubbish to the tip, tow bar fitted, modified headlights etc. She was in wrong yes but others who are far worse and criminal behaviour get alot less. At least they are all alive and hopefully learn from this horrific experience.

the 1000cc Sports bike was over taking another car so was on the wrong side of the road when the bike hit into an oncoming car. High Park road is lined with parked cars. It really isn’t the road to over take while riding down it. Even more so at 3pm in the afternoon when High Park Road is busy with drivers collecting small children from School. The rider had previous convictions so he obviously has no respect for society. Weather the woman driving the VW did, or did not have insurance the out come would still have been the same. Get a grip! They were both in the wrong, but he was driving whilst under the influence of drugs and so would have caused an accident at some point. As mentioned above he has previous convictions so has no respect for anyone or anything.
Last conviction was years ago and wasn’t under the influence of drugs as was sober and just finished work fully licensed with tax mot and insured fully legal at the time but had something left in the system since the Friday night before that crash on Monday! And why didn’t get done for dangerous driving?? Oh yeah cus police wouldn’t have done him for it cus wasn’t overtaking on wrong side of road ask the police before u judge u muppets! However, had she waited for her husband to finish getting ready (if that lame excuse is true) or that she had not driven due to not being legally allowed to, then she wouldn’t have been in that place, at that time and wouldn’t have been hit by the junkie bike rider. It is possible that the bike rider would have either hit someone else, or simply passed that point, as she wouldn’t have been there.

An uninsured driver with no licence having an accident with a drugged up motorcyclist. Without the accident, she would still be driving around now and so would he on his motorbike. Perhaps it’s fortunate that they hit each other and not several other innocent people?
This whole sorry episode just reflects what’s going on on our roads these days – and, no, it’s not just an Island thing.
So many illegal drivers that they are now taking each other out. Police need to do more spot checks to get order back on the roads.
