A motorcyclist who was involved in a serious collision back in March was twice the drug-drive limit at the time of the crash, a court has heard.
Daniel Thorpe, 35, of Cross Street in Oakfield, pleaded guilty to 1 count of drug driving when he appeared in front of the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court this morning (Tuesday).
As previously reported by Island Echo, Thorpe collided with a VW Golf whilst on his Yamaha Yzf-R1 motorcycle on High Park Road in Elmfield on 7th March 2022.
At today’s hearing, Ann Smout, prosecuting told the court that Thorpe had tried to overtake a slow-moving vehicle. When overtaking he moved into the middle of the road and collided with the other vehicle – a black VW Golf – which was travelling significantly quicker. both vehicles failed to stop in time, leading to a significant smash.
Shortly after the impact, the driver of the other vehicle quickly fled the scene leaving Thorpe on the road with multiple injuries and his bike severely damaged.
Once he was tended to by emergency services Thorpe did a roadside drugs wipe, which indicated positive for cannabis. He completed a blood test which later returned a result of Benzoylecgonine, a breakdown of cocaine, at 106 units – double the legal limit of 50.
The 35-year-old has 2 previous convictions having been charged with possession of cannabis and cocaine back in 2016 and in 2006 was charged with drink driving.
In defence, Jim Osborne said that his client had suffered major injuries after the crash including a broken back and pelvis and that he now suffers from serious mobility issues. He also said that his client had consumed cocaine on the previous Friday and didn’t know it would still be in his system on the Monday.
Thorpe was handed a 12-month disqualification from driving, ordered to pay £120 fine, £85 costs and £34 surcharge fee.

Disgusting vermin, should he have hit an innocent person he would not care less, so I hope next time it is his neck broken. As now he will be claiming disability which we all fund, and much of that will go on drugs ‘for the pain’ when caught.
Low life deserve all and more than they ever get.
Let’s just hope there’s no next time!
This moronic idiot should be banned for life and quite honestly he should also not be entitled to any benefits in relation to his lack of mobility because it was self inflicted. There are genuine people on this planet who are struck with illnesses and die because idiots like this are taking up the time of ambulances and hospital beds. Shame on you Daniel, you are a menace to society and you should hang your head in embarrassment to your friends and family.
What about the other driver?
Caught?
Charged?
So he cannot now legally drive a bike that he likely couldn’t drive anyway due to his ‘mobility issues’ following a crash caused by illegally driving his bike in the first place. What a pathetic so-called punishment from the courts again!! Had he been dealt with appropriately on his TWO previous convictions then he wouldn’t have been in the saddle to cause this crash would he?
Throw the book at Drug users who drive.
I don’t have any sympathy at all for morons who drink/drug drive. I bet the driver of the VW Golf had something to hide, report said the driver fled the scene. Idiots.
Innocent drug and drink free motorists could get hit by these stupid, selfish people.
Hopefully this will be a wake up call and he’ll stop riding his bike while drugged up?!?
I get confused by a legal ‘drug-drive limit’ for drugs (Class A) that are absolutely illegal in the first place.
Co codamol shows up as an opioid.
As a biker myself my initial feeling when this was first reported was concern that the rider would be ok. Hearing the latest news that has now changed to “good riddance”. I hope he will be off the road for good, but seeing his history he will more than likely be back on the road while banned. Thanks again useless island magistrates.
Thorpe did a roadside drugs wipe, which indicated positive for cannabis. He completed a blood test which later returned a result of Benzoylecgonine, why is there any legal limit for Drug Driving?, it should be zero, as the drugs mentioned are illegal in the first place. enen with some prescription Drugs it says do not drive does this mean you can now Drive after taking them?.
Gives good bikers a bad name. Just like the scrotes on their modified 125cc groms with illegal number plates, missing or modified L plates, illegal exhausts and in some cases non-working indicators. But apparently pointing this out is not allowed. In my experience, bikes modified in this manor are often ridden very badly and are missing MOT/TAX/Insurance/Licence. Police need to come to Ryde @5pm. They can fill their quota for the month in minutes.
Great no sympathy whatsoever, drink/ drug drive tough suck it up !!!! As long as you don’t try to claim disability benefits , because I am not paying for your stupidity !!!!
And neither should any law abiding citizen …..
Hope they throw the book at you ….
What did the car driver that fled the scene get?
Perhaps some of those who commented on the original article would like to review their comments now the facts are known? ‘The bike rider was fully sober and coherent’ ‘the biker swerved to avoid an accident’ ‘those are the facts I was there’
Maybe if people stopped jumping in with both feet before the facts are established they wouldn’t end up looking like fools?
Surely you are mistaken Catherine or the article above is incorrect. The motorcyclist was charged and found guilty having cocaine in his system.
“Reasonable?”, “Allen”, You do realise Catherine used quotation marks to highlight the the sort of comments that were previously used in the older article, or do you not read comments properly?
Catherine, the 1000cc Sports bike was over taking another car so was on the wrong side of the road when the bike hit into an oncoming car. High Park road is lined with parked cars. It really isn’t the road to over take while riding down it. Even more so at 3pm in the afternoon when High Park Road is busy with drivers collecting small children from School. The rider had previous convictions so he obviously has no respect for society. Weather the woman driving the VW did, or did not have insurance the out come would still have been the same. An idiot with no respect for the law high on drugs charging at speed on a powerful sports motorcycle down a narrow residential road lined with parked cars & used by parents to collect their small children from school, was bound to crash into something!!!! You only need to look at the state of the bike after the crash to know that the rider was speeding! Are you his mother Catherine? Please remove your comment it’s utter nonsense. Stop defending this scum bag! (If you actually were there & gave the Police a witness statement the rider wouldn’t be in trouble with the law, would he?)
Thank you some one who actually make seance.
When a Dumb Grockle like this Nipper causes problems over here, they should be sent back to the Mainland & not allowed back.
Read the article properly before believing half this bullshit your all quick to judge on lol
