coweslifeboatnightA multi-agency rescue took place during the early hours of this morning (Sunday) after a woman fell around 15ft in East Cowes.

Firefighters from Newport were called to Old Castle Point on East Cowes Esplanade at 01:48 to assist the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service with rescuing a woman who had fallen 15ft and broken her leg.

The rescue operation later involved Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team, Newport Incident Response Team and Cowes RNLI, who launched their lifeboat at 02:30 to evacuate the casualty by sea due to the remote location and restricted road access due to a previous landslide.

The Needles Coastguard Rescue Team also attended the scene after concluding an incident in Yarmouth in which a couple of male swimmers decided to swim back to their yacht after missing the last water taxi. A 999 call reported the pair in the water, however both were ok and the situation was resolved.

Coastguard officers used water rescue equipment and ropes to lower the female casualty onto the beach at East Cowes and onto Cowes lifeboat, before she was transferred to an ambulance and onwards to St Mary’s Hospital, Newport.
