20 Wight Tri members gathered in the shadow of Carisbrooke Castle, ready to prove their mettle in the Duathlon of Carisbrooke.
As the golden sun bathed the Priory car park, the event began. The runners charged forward, weaving through the castle lanes and up the ‘shrubbery’ for either 1 or 2 loops of 2.5k.
The bike loop was a 19k spin through Carisbrooke, Shorwell and Chillerton – not the easiest of courses with plenty of elevation with some contestants as swift as arrows others sturdy as wagon wheels.
Birthday boy Matt Burgess – who completed the long bike course in a flying 1:17:07 – was 53 seconds outside his nominated time, but it was Dan Morgan who claimed the nominated golden crown time, missing his estimate by a mere 52 seconds with a time of 1:01:08 for the short-bike-short course and a personal best.
