If you go down to the woods or beach or park today – you might get a surprise! As part of the Isle of Wight Council’s ongoing anti-littering campaign with Keep Britain Tidy, a number of eye-catching pink boards to discourage littering have been placed around the Island.
The ‘What’s Your Excuse’ campaign with Keep Britain Tidy has been designed to make potential litterers and fly-tippers think about the reasons they are littering in the first place and is part of the council’s ongoing aim to keep our beautiful Island litter-free.
Cabinet lead on environment, heritage and waste management, Councillor Jonathan Bacon, said:
“Our aim is to create clean, litter-free environments for our residents and visitors and I hope these signs will make people stop and think.
“We have already put in place increased litter collection in places of heavy foot-fall and recruitment of extra staff to keep parks, public open spaces and beaches clean and safe, while promoting local amenities and businesses and supporting a safer community and cleaner environment.
“We will be carrying out further campaigns over the rest of this year around littering, dog mess and fly-tipping as part of our efforts to preserve our Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status.”
The boards have been placed at Church Litten Park, Gurnard Green, Appley Park, Western Esplanade, Seaclose Park and Rylstone Gardens, with more to come at other sites soon.
The council has become a member of the Keep Britain Tidy network which brings together organisations with the common goal of improving local environmental quality through eliminating litter, ending waste and improving local places.

Anti litter campaign, will fly tippers and litterbugs take any notice of these signs?
I very much doubt it, but still the council see fit to litter our eyeline with these stupid notices and signs!
At least they’re doing something. They missed out the answer: Because I’m a lowlife cretin and proud of it and I enjoy dropping rubbish everywhere and polluting the sea with my discarded cartons and cans because I like to think I’m causing damage to the environment because that’s just the sort of person I am, but I’ve got a whole army of do gooders sticking up for me who say I’m disadvantaged and underprivileged. So whoopie do,
Whilst the council are on the subject of why are you and what is your excuse i put it to you council what is your excuse for wasting tax payers hard earned money
And what is your excuse for wasting even more tax payers hard earned money
You are quick to take and quicker to waste with nothing in return
So it’s about time you lot and the MP start giving answers to the people that pay you.
Council should also get there contractors who cut the grass verges to pick up the litter before they strim. What is the point of strimming the litter into shreds creating more mess and more work for the litter pickers after.
You expert the people who go round strimming to have the brains to even think of that? They leave a trail of destruction everywhere they go, they can’t even tell the difference between high grass and rare wild plants in bloom and just flail their stupid strimmers around destroying everything. I wonder if they employ people doing community service to do the job or people with extreme learning difficulties, because nobody can be that stupid surely?
Good point
We like the shiny little colourful shreads of litter. It adds to the beauty of the IOW
The bins are full and I can’t get my rubbish in
Take it down the tip then
We have two locals in Totland Bay and Colwell Bay areas that every day always do litter patrols.I suspect the people who throw the rubbish out of their car windows here in the West Wight wouldn’t be able to read these comments anyway, so I guess its a pointless exercise leaving these statements. Except than to say a huge “Thank You” to that couple (who I wont name) for all their constant help in keeping my village clean.
On one more point, maybe in stead of these gaudy signs how about using “COVERT CCTV IN OPERATION” signs instead. See if they’ll risk it then?
Seeing what usually happens to the signs telling irresponsible dog owners not to leave mess everywhere, I shan’t be surprised if the signs get vandalised in no time from the usual scum. Either with graffiti or just damaged or removed altogether and thrown on the beach. I would hope they had cctv in the area. Or better still, some form of electric shock or something to any scumbag who tries to damage them.
Some of the cyclists are just as bad,i caught one on my dashcam at Mottistone throwing an empty water bottle onto a grass verge as he rode along,i shouted as i went by to pick up his c*&p and got the finger for a reply but cyclists are not accountable as they don`t have number plates and they all seem to dress the same.
Yep, agree.cyclist and joggers are the worse. Have you witnessed on TV, The tour de France and the London marathon ! Disgusting behaviour. What sort of message does that send out to the local druggies and alcoholics sitting on the bench ?
that sign is soon to be litter itself and I bet it isn’t recyclable.
The council have littered the streets with signs that will be ripped off and discarded in the road – which will ensure that the irony is well and truly demonstrated.
Get the Councillors out patrolling the worst areas.
Lets see them try to deal with the constant litter bugs in certain areas.
would love to see them dishing out penalty fines which they have introduced.
Typical island council. Change the sign to warn chavs against littering.
