Coastguards were able to swiftly rescue disoriented walkers on Tennyson Down near Freshwater last week, thanks to the precise location-tracking capabilities of the What3Words app.
The Needles Coastguard Rescue Team was called into action after thick fog suddenly descended over the area, leaving the walkers lost and distressed.
Staying in place, they made the right call by dialling 999 and asking for the Coastguard. They were then able to share their exact location using the What3Words app, which pinpoints users to a specific 3-metre square anywhere in the world.
With that information relayed to Solent Coastguard, Coastguard Rescue Officers were quickly able to find the individuals and guide them to safety.
Walkers are reminded to:
- Always ensure phones are fully charged before setting out
- Stay put if lost or injured
- Call 999 and ask for the Coastguard in coastal emergencies
I am surprised they got a signal in such conditions.
Well done to the walkers. The fog came down so quickly , they definitely used their technology wisely. Thankyou also to the emergency team
I always find the best strategy to avoid the need of being rescued from Tennyson Downs is not to walk over cliff edges. If you avoid this error, do not climb over any fences and keep walking, you will reach civilisation.
Strange as the what3words app is a map app and clearly shows where one is! Why did they need a rescue.
