UPDATED: A water leak in a residential property has forced the evacuation of Ryde Town Council’s offices and has resulted in a response from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service this lunchtime (Tuesday).
3 fire appliances from Ryde and Newport have responded to the scene on Lind Street following an alarm activation at just before 11:30.
A large amount of water has poured through the ceiling of the offices, flooding the ground floor. Staff are also reporting a smell of electrical burning.
Lind Street is currently blocked as a result of the incident and Southern Vectis buses are diverting via St Thomas Street.
UPDATE @ 12:20 – The incident has now been brought under control, although significant damage has been sustained to 2 offices.
Fire crews are assisting to clear water from the ground floor and are conducting checks to ensure there is no risk of fire.
Lind Street has reopened to traffic and Southern Vectis buses have resumed a normal route.
The offices will be closed to the public for the rest of the day whilst assessments are carried out.
