Immigration officers arrested 2 Vietnamese nationals following a raid on a nail salon in Ryde on Thursday, the Home Office has confirmed.
It was just before 15:00 that Immigration Enforcement, accompanied by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary, arrived at the door of The Union Nail Salon on Union Street.
The unexpected presence of immigration officials surprised the workers inside, some of whom were in the middle of treatments.
A number of other customers were turned away when they arrived for their appointments.
After conducting enquiries, 2 individuals were arrested for working illegally and were marched out the door and into awaiting vehicles.
The pair have since been bailed.
Island Echo understands that the Home Office also made visits to businesses in Freshwater and Shanklin earlier in the day.
A Home Office spokesperson has said:
“Illegal working undermines honest employers and undercuts local wages – it is against the law to work in the UK when you have no right to be here. The government is clamping down on employers who do this up and down the country.
“Since coming into power, a year ago we have doubled enforcement action nationwide with visits and arrests, including to businesses like nail bars, up by over 50%.”
Well at least they are working,
