VENTNOR SHOCK HIGH RIDING BASINGSTOKE

Ventnor clinched their fifth win of the season with an eye catching victory over second placed Basingstoke & North Hants in Division 1 of the British Gas Southern Premier League at Newclose on Saturday.

Fit again Adam Wilson (4-29) and Schaughn van Greunen (3-33) did the damage as the visitors slipped from 169-4 to 187 all out with ex Shanklin, Kent and Hampshire all rounder David Griffiths top scoring with 52.

The hosts were given a fine start in reply, with Ben Duggan (40) and James Cheek (68) impressing in an opening stand of 81. A flurry of wickets made for a tense finish as Ventnor slid to 169-7 but an unbeaten half century from van Greunen saw his side over the line.

Sarisbury Athletic are the visitors to Newclose on Saturday.

DEFEATS FOR SECOND AND THIRD TEAMS

The second team lost by five wickets to Hythe & Dibden in Division 1 of the Hampshire League at Steephill on Saturday.

An excellent knock of 88 from skipper Martin Blackman rescued the innings from the depths of 85-7 with Zach Wells (22) and Zeph Wells (19) offering much needed support down the order.

The home side made early inroads with the Wells brothers amongst the wickets but a mid-order partnership of 126 secured a comfortable win for the visitors.

Longparish visit Steephill on Saturday.

The third eleven were defeated by eight wickets at Gosport Borough III at Privett Park on Saturday.  James Attrill (20) and Dave Cox (27 not out) were the only batsmen to reach double figures in an all out total of 78, a target the home side passed inside seventeen overs.

REMEMBERING JOHN HILSUM

Sunday will be a special day for Ventnor with a ceremony to name the Pavilion in memory of John Hilsum, an inspirational and much missed man who served the Club so loyally for more than 40 years and whose vision gave the Club such a wonderful facility.

The ceremony will take place at 13:00 and the Club will be delighted to welcome members and non-members alike.

As part of the Club’s ‘Ventnor Day’, the ceremony will be preceded at 10:00 by matches for young players incorporating the ECB’S All Stars initiative before the senior side welcome East Meon at 14:00.

The Bar will be open and hot food available throughout day while the Club will also be running a raffle with some attractive prizes for the winners.
