Ventnor began their Southern Premier League Division 1 season with a 6-wicket win away to New Milton.
New Milton were put in to bat first. Ventnor’s new overseas signing, Sri Lankan Dineth Thimodya, took 4-14 before Hugh Calloway cleaned up the tail to take the last 2 wickets in the 47th over.
Ventnor were given a target of 162 to beat. Martin Blackman (67 not out) and Ross Whyte (60) put on a century stand for the 5th wicket, earning victory for Ventnor with 22 balls to spare and a maximum 22 points for the Island side.
In Hampshire League Division 1, Ryde lost their opening game to Fareham & Crofton by 122 runs. The visitors batted first, scoring 284-9 from their 50 overs. Ryde were bowled out for 172 in reply with Andy Woodward top scoring with 42 runs.
In Division 3 (South), Shanklin & Godshill began their season by beating Fareham & Crofton 2nd XI by 6 wickets. The home side were bowled out for a modest 136, with Harry Moore, Ben White, and Callum Wright all picking up 2 wickets. Shanklin reached their target with the loss of 4 wickets with James Lucy (46) and George Niemiec (34 not out) top scoring.
In Division 4 (South), Ventnor 2nd XI won their Isle of Wight derby game against Ryde 2nd XI with a 57-run victory at Steephill. Ventnor batted first and made 231-8, with Mark Fletcher (69) and Sam Guerin (39) top scoring. Frank Gumley (4-40) and Jerin Jose (3-42) were the top Ryde wicket takers. Ryde were bowled out for 174, with Kerry Rice (49 not out) their best batsman. Souvak Sanyal (4-29) was the pick of the Ventnor bowlers.
In Island League Division 1, Northwood vanquished Shanklin and Godshill 2nd XI by an astonishing 321 runs. Northwood scored a massive 381 for 5 off their 40 overs. Andy Harris was Northwood’s top scorer with 153 runs, including 17 4s and 8 6s. Shanklin were skittled out for 60 in reply, with Liam Roberts (4-25) the pick of the Northwood bowlers.
