Mindless vandals have caused hundreds of pounds worth of damage to the chapel at Ventnor Cemetery, smashing several windows and attempting to force entry to the inside.
Large stones have been used to smash almost every pane of glass around the chapel building, which is located at the centre point of Ventnor Cemetery off Newport Road.
Thankfully, the cretins didn’t manage to gain access to the inside of the chapel but footprints on the front door show the effort that went into doing so. The door has unfortunately also sustained damage, but a padlock kept the premises secure.
Police have been informed of the incident.
The Grade II listed chapel dates back to 1870 and is a good example of an Early English style Anglican chapel. It was designed by local architect F Newman of Ryde.
Friends of Ventnor Cemetery – a group established to look after the interests of the public space – is aware of the situation and will be looking to make repairs as soon as possible.
