A 19-year-old man from Ryde who drove to McDonald’s at 04:00 in the morning whilst more than twice the drink-drive limit has been banned from the roads for 2 years.
Benjamin Wheeler, of High Park Road in Ryde, appeared before Magistrates on Friday charged with 1 count of drink driving.
The court heard from the Crown Prosecution Service that during the early hours of 22nd August, Wheeler was spotted pulling out of McDonald’s car park onto Brading Road at speed – right in front of a Police car. Officers witnessed Wheeler’s BMW swerving across the road before then mounting a kerb, resulting in the blue lights being activated.
Once pulled over, Wheeler was breathalysed and arrested. Whilst waiting to be transported to custody he struggled to stay awake and his speech was slurred. The evidential reading eventually taken at Newport Police Station was 97 – the legal limit being 35.
Defending, Barry Arnett said his client was extremely sorry and remorseful for his actions. He had been dropped home after an evening out in Newport but then made the mistake of driving around half a mile to McDonalds in Ryde for food.
The Bournemouth University student, who studies Business Management, is said to have made an error in judgement and a silly but serious mistake.
Magistrates handed down a 24-month disqualification from driving and a 12-month community order with 120 hours of unpaid work attached. Wheeler must also pay £85 costs and a £95 surcharge.
Surely such selfish people need locking up for a month or so. A ban is a feeble punishment, as it is likely that if somone ‘knowingly’ drives whilst drunk, they will likely ‘drive whilst banned’.
Tinted windows, shades and another car is easy to get away with now we only have three police cars on the Isle at one time.
Only 3 cars? Is that a fact?
So, he’s now qualified for an ology in stupidity, perhaps he will get a job at McDonald’s after he finishes his course at the far left-wing University factory.
“far left-wing University factory”
What? Margaret Thatcher went to UNI, was she left wing? Sounds more like you never tried to better yourself and so to compensate you pretend that they are not worth going too.
No doubt you think Eton and Oxbridge ar also communist breeding-grounds?
You need to learn how to spell before promoting Left Wing University, “Ar” ????.. in-it..
I thought you had to be ‘quite’ smart to go to university? This dumb a*s doesn’t seem to understand the rules of the road. DON’T DRINK & DRIVE
Yet another Beamer, eh?
At least it wasn’t an Audi
