Mobile phone provider Three looks set to roll out 5G to another Isle of Wight town.
Approval is being sought by Reading-based CK Hutchison Networks to install a 20m high 5G mast in East Cowes.
The equipment would be installed on York Avenue and would be used by network Three UK. Cable boxes would also be installed on the footpath.
5G has been introduced across the country and promises faster download speeds and greater network capacity.
Before the application was submitted, East Cowes Town Council was approached to comment on the plans. 1 councillor said if the town wanted 5G, a mast was needed, as in other parts of the Island and in major urban areas. Other councillors however said it was unsightly, in a very unpopular location, overlooking a children’s play park and school, above the treetops and in a residential area.
An unnamed councillor went on to say it is not in keeping with the town’s vision for the Jubilee Recreation area and it would detract from the historic tree line which was planted by Prince Albert.
It was questioned why the mast could not be added to the existing telecommunications equipment and not create ‘new hideous overbearing structures’.
Just 1 objection has so far been submitted saying it would have a detrimental impact on footway users it would create a slalom effect and may be problematic for disabled people.
You can view the plans, 22/02237/16APA, on the Isle of Wight Council’s planning portal. Comments can be submitted until 18th January .

Wait for it, the covid conspiracy morons will be here saying it causes virus infections. Just like how they say a mask does nothing despite being used for decades in operations and a mountain of evidence that they do. It’s funny how they pretend that they never said 5G was to blame. Just another long line of their lies and idiocy being exposed.
Shame as it allows the government to get away with their botched handing of the pandemic. Lock down was only needed for the people who could have died from it. Not for 18+ years old hard working man and woman who are fit as a butchers dog.
OMG, what about the brain damaged children youths and adults in the vicinity?
I guess they will unfortunately STILL all be lurking in the neighbourhood.
As east Cowes councillors and NIMBY’s run to the hills with pitchforks sacrificing children.
The metal beast in the park, what mystic black magic have these oveners bought to the island.
Arrrrgggggghhhhhh
There will definetely be a run on bacofoil for all those deniers,
I don’t give a monkey’s if 5G turns eggs green or makes babies born with two heads; truth is, nobody except its promoters needs 5G!
Babies with two heads….. Wroxal must have superb 5G then
5g… I cannot even get 3g in my area… fix the problems that are already there before introducing new ones…
This is the fix to that very problem. 5g isn’t an alternative to 3g, it’s an objective upgrade. It would be like calling for copper broadband wires to be fixed instead of installing fibre.
What will the range of this 5g mast be?
There will need to be more 5g masts to have the same coverage as 4g.
This means more electrical power is required.
I’d prefer 4g coverage was increased to get rid of dead spots on the island.
5g coverage will never be as widespread as 4g because of the extra masts needed.
Also why would anyone need to download a UHD movie in 15 seconds to watch on a 6″ phone screen?
But I guess marketing has its priorities even if it means having to build another power station.
ill just get my tin foil hat on..
