THOUSANDS of cyclists battled the weather on Sunday for the first ever closed road Wight Riviera Sportive event.

The atmosphere was buzzing from the go, with a mass start lead out from Yarmouth harbour front leading into the 25km closed road Avant loop. Riders took in the sights and sounds of the fabulous locations such as Freshwater Bay and the joys of the West Wight countryside before heading off to the open roads of the garden Isle.

To the rider’s misfortune, the nice weather due for later this week didn’t arrive early, causing the  roads to be wet and slippery with rain lashing into the faces of thousands, making for quite a round-the-island challenge.
