Firefighters from Ryde and Newport worked to extinguish a small line side fire in Ashey this afternoon (Monday) – the third such fire in the past week. At 16:44, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service mobilised appliances to the Gatehouse Lane area of Ashey following reports of an embankment fire along the IW Steam Railway track, between Havenstreet and Smallbrook. The grass fire was eventually located near to Rowlands Woods and extinguished using knapsacks and beaters. On Sunday, 1 appliance from Ryde was mobilised to another small line side fire at Ashey, near to the tunnel. It was swiftly extinguished using knapsacks. Last Friday, firefighters tackled another line side fire – again in Ashey – between Deacons Lane and the railway tunnel.
